I Guess I Kinda Know How It Feels to Be a Red Sox Fan

Rewind back to the 2004 ALCS.  Red Sox and Yankees.  Yankees have control of the series  being up three games to zero in the best of seven series.  The Yankees just pounded the Red Sox in game three with 19-7 beat down and it seemed to be the nail in the coffin of the Red Sox.  Then weird things started happening.  Yankees closer Mariano Rivera was getting and David Ortiz was getting clutch hits in Games four and five.  Red Sox won game six to tie the series up three to three to force an improbable Game seven.  I remember the day of Game Seven not really wanting to talk about the series and thinking there is no way the Yanks can lose this game can they.  While I’m sure Red Sox fans were as confident as they have ever been in the 86 years before that Game Seven.

I’m feeling the same way as Red Sox fan did in 2004 about the Philadelphia Flyers right now.  After being down to Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference Semi-finals three game to none (which the Bruins never seem to really outplay the Flyers at all this series) some weird things started to happen.  The Flyers got Simon Gagne back from injury in Game four and win.  Then in Game five Flyers goalie Brian Bouche got a sprained knee as a fellow Flyer fell on him and Michael Leighton took over Bouche’s duties in net.  Leighton hasn’t been in net for the Flyers in six weeks and yet he looked as sharp as can be as he didn’t give up a goal in the half of Game five he played in.  In Game six (Leighton’s first ever playoff start) he didn’t looked phased at all as he had a shutout going until the Bruins scored with around a minute left in the game, which the Flyers ended up winning 2-1 forcing a Game seven.

Right now I’m feeling like Sox fan in 2004 thinking there is no way this team is going to lose in Game seven.  The other team has to be thinking how can we close this team out, while we are thinking we are in that team’s head they can’t beat us.

Hopefully after Game seven tonight, I can feel the same way Red Sox fan did in 2004 as they made one of the greatest comebacks in all of sports.
